How To Install FileZilla With FTPES Connection
Transfer Folders/Files Between Your Computer And Website Securely
Continuing from the previous Install FileZilla FTP Client section. In this section I will show you how to create a Secure FTPES Connection (otherwise known as a SFTP Connection) for FileZilla. A FTPES Connection is necessary if your website is hosted on a secure server. If it is not, this set up procedure will still apply to normal, non-secure, connections (for websites that are not hosted on a secure server).
GETTING STARTED
To create a FTP Connection in FileZilla begin by clicking on the FILE menu and then select the SITE MANAGER menu-item. Doing so will bring up the Site Manager window (Fig 1.1) whereby you can then create a new website profile (ftp connection profile) by clicking on its NEW SITE button.
Fig 1.0 Click on the FILE menu and then on the SITE MANAGER menu-item to continue
Fig 1.1 Click on the NEW SITE button to create a new website profile (ftp connection profile)
After clicking on the NEW SITE button the New Site window's edit boxes become available, ready for you to insert your FTP Account details. The ftp account
details that were given to you, via email and/or website service, by your web hosting provider when you first ordered a web hosting package from them.
Before entering your ftp account details it is advised to give your ftp connection profile a name. It is named New Site to begin with but you should name
it after your website for example. I have named my ftp connection profile WCH in this example.
When you have named your ftp connection profile continue by filling in the ftp details on the right-hand-side of the window. These should correspond with the ftp details given to you by your web hosting provider.
Fig 1.2 Rename the New Site, Enter your FTP Details and then click on the CONNECT button
Although the ftp details should be easy enough to enter you should be aware that sometimes web hosting providers do not give you all the ftp details,
for whatever reason(s). For example. They might not tell your website is hosted on a secure server and therefore needs secure server ftp settings, such
as FTPES, in order to work with a particular ftp client such as FileZilla. By not giving this information, and by you using standard settings, the result
might be you receiving an error message simply because you have the wrong Server Type selected for example.
At the same time they cannot give out ftp details for every single ftp client on the market simply because there are too many of them. FTP Clients are
supposed to follow standard settings and therefore work with all hosting servers, but sometimes they do not work. This could be because they have changed
the name of a setting, to make it easier to understand for the human, but in doing so have alienate the web hosting providers who use the standard names.
So search the internet, and ask your web hosting provider, when you come across a setting name you do not understand.
In my case websitecreationhelp.com is on a secure server and therefore uses secure ftp setting such as Server Type: FTPES. This kind of thing you need to
check with your Web Hosting Provider beforehand.
If your website is hosted on a non-secure server your SERVER TYPE setting should be set to FTP only and your LOGON TYPE setting should be set to NORMAL.
A non-secure server does not support/protect your web space (website folder) using SSL Security and so on (very technical!). Passwords, Files and other
data might not be sent through the line in an encrypted format for example. So a secure server protects your website and its content better, basically.
The ftp settings in Fig 1.2 match those ftp details given to me by my web hosting provider. So in my case I entered those ftp details into FileZilla's
site manager as follows:
|
Once the ftp details have been entered click on the CONNECT button to connect to your web space (website's root folder), via the ftp server associated with your web hosting package. The user name and password etc will be checked and authorized whereby the USER (i.e. ftpuser@websitecreationhelp.com) can then begin uploading files to your web space and downloading files from it.
Fig 1.3 FileZilla has connected to my web space, via the ftp server, using the provided ftp settings
If all goes well FileZilla should of successfully connected to your web space (website's root folder), via the ftp server associated with your web hosting package. If not, contact your web hosting provider for help.
