| INSTALL ACEFTP PRO |
AceFTP is a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Client (program) from Visicom Media that is used to
transfer files from your computer to your web space (main folder and public_html sub-folder). Web pages, Music files, PHP Scripts and so on. AceFTP
comes in a Freeware (Free-To-Use) version and a Professional (30 Days Trial) version that can be bought for around £25 (at the time of writing). More
details can be found on their Products AceFTP web page. In this section I will show
you how to install AceFTP 3 Pro.
AceFTP 3 Pro (and AceFTP Freeware) might not be the best ftp client around, and the same can be said of all ftp client software, but the reason I like it
is because of its ease-of-use, which I beleive makes it an ideal software for the absolute beginner. I have tried the freeware version, which has a
pop-up (purchase/register) window appear each time you start it, but apart from that it has the same interface as the pro version. In the pro version you
do not get the pop-up (purchase/register) window and obviously with the pro version you get extra features, which to me were worth paying for. Ease-of-use
is not just about the interface it is also about the settings. For example. With AceFTP 3 Pro (and the freeware version) you only need to enter your
website's domain name, user name and password once to connect to your ftp account. Thereafter you just click on a CONNECT menu-item. With other ftp
clients I have tried some of them make the whole connection scenario confusing with technical requirements/settings. So "try before you buy" is a must!
When you have downloaded AceFTP 3 Pro (filename: aceftp3pro.exe) go to the folder where it was downloaded to, usually your DOWNLOADS folder, and double
click on it to execute (launch/run) it.
Double clicking on the aceftp3pro.exe file brings up a UAC (User Account Control) security requester asking you if you would like to CONTINUE running (launching/executing) the aceftp3pro.exe file, which in turn runs (launches/executes) the AceFTP 3 Pro installation wizard - The wizard (user interface) that helps you with the installation process. Click on the CONTINUE button if you want to continue with the installation of AceFTP 3 Pro, otherwise click on the CANCEL button to abort the installation process.
User Account Control (UAC) is a feature of Windows Vista that helps to prevent unauthorized changes to the computer, such as deleting a system file or installing software. When attempting to install AceFTP 3 Pro the above UAC security requester appears and then automatically block you off, because it wants to know if you are the one attempting to install AceFTP 3 Pro and not a piece of malicious software for example. In the above case simply click on the CONTINUE button to continue, or on the CANCEL button to cancel the installation process.
The first window to appear from the AceFTP 3 Pro installation wizard is its Welcome message, above. Simply click on its NEXT button to continue. You will
then be taken to the License Agreement, where you must agree to its Terms & Conditions before continuing further.
At any time throughout the installation process you can click on the Cancel button, if a Cancel button is available of
course. However. In the case of the installation process, even if you click on a Cancel button the installation might
have gone too far for it to be stopped, cancelled and/or reversed. So think very carefully before deciding to install any
thing onto your Computer.
Read the License Agreement carefully. Although these tend to contain useless information, they usually explain Copyright
issues or Usage issues that clarify who can use the software and who cannot. So if, for example, you are told that a
certain piece of software is Free and/or Free To Use you may want to clarify this by reading the agreement. Some
installation wizards do not allow you to continue, by fading out the CONTINUE button, until you have read (scrolled down)
the license agreement. When you are ready and if you agree, put a tick next to I HAVE READ THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS, AND
CONSENT TO BE BOUND BY THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT and then click on the NEXT button to continue.
The next window that appears (below) is the License Agreement for the VMN Toolbar installation. If you want to install the
VMN Toolbar click on the I ACCEPT TO BE BOUND BY THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT radio button, otherwise click on the NO, I DO NOT
WANT TO INSTALL THE VMN TOOLBAR radio button. When you have made your decision click on the NEXT button to continue.
After taking care of the License Agreements the next thing to do is decide which folder AceFTP 3 Pro, and the rest of the installation folders/files, should be installed in to. The default installation folder (path name) is currently set to C:\Program Files\Visicom Media\AceFTP 3 Pro\ but you can change this by clicking on the BROWSE button (below). The BROWSE button brings up a file requester that allows you to browse for an alternative, default, installation folder or to create a new installation folder of your own. Normally you would not change the default installation folder though unless you were having trouble with the installation. For example. With some bad installations re-installing the software using a different installation folder can resolve the bad installation (technical: because the registry entries are then changed). So if you do want to change the installation folder simply click on the BROWSE button, otherwise stick with the default installation folder. After sorting out what you want to do with the installation folder, change it or leave it as it is, click on the INSTALL button to continue.
Figures 1.6 and 1.7 above finish off the installation process. The last thing to do is click on the FINISH button. Before
you do that though you may want to untick the MAKE VMN.Net MY START PAGE (web browser Home Page), especially if you use a
preferred Home Page and do not want it changed to the VMN.Net home page.
In Fig 1.7 above I have RUN AceFTP 3 Pro ticked. This means AceFTP 3 Pro will be launched (executed/run) after clicking on
the FINISH button. One of the first tasks of AceFTP 3 Pro is to check if you are a 30 Days Trial user or a Paid-Up user.
Regardless of which one you are, on the first launch of AceFTP 3 Pro it will display the following message requester
informing you of how many days you have left to trial/test AceFTP 3 Pro. The message requester also has three buttons on it.
BUY NOW (purchase online), ENTER ACTIVATION KEY (enter your purchased registration details) and USE TRIAL VERSION (continue
with your trial/testing).
In this example I am assuming you have pre-purchased AceFTP 3 Pro online and received the appropriate email with your
registration details inside it, and therefore now need to click on the ENTER ACTIVATION KEY button to continue.
Clicking on the ENTER ACTIVATION KEY button brings up the following AceFTP Registration window where you should then enter your Registration Name into the REGISTRATION NAME edit box and your Registration Code (Activation Key) into the REGISTRATION CODE edit box. Doing so will then register your copy of AceFTP 3 Pro and should never bother you with the Registration window again. You should only see the registration window again if you are using a Trial version of AceFTP 3 Pro.
You can also enter your registration details at a later time by clicking on the HELP menu, ABOUT menu-item and then on the REGISTER button.
Once your registration details have been verified/registered you will see the following message requester confirming so - Click on its OK button to start using AceFTP 3 Pro.
